Cattle competition set to shine spotlight on Australian beef industry

26 November 2014

Nominations for the Beef Australia cattle judging competition opened earlier this month, with the spotlight once again on the industry.

Considered as one of the most prestigious events of its type anywhere in the world, the judging will take place in May next year and cattle farmers from all over Australia are expected and encouraged to enter.

Beef Australia Chief Executive Denis Cox explained the potential global reach that the expo can have. "At the core of Beef Australia's existence is showcasing to the world the best beef cattle Australia has to offer. For cattlemen a Beef Australia championship is akin to an athlete winning an Olympic medal - the fact that our national exposition is held just once every three years means that trophies are highly prized and keenly sought after by the top cattle producers," he said.

The last time the event was held in 2012, there were more than 2,000 entrants. Next year's competition will see 34 classes per breed of cattle judged, which will culminate with the grand prize winner being announced on May 7. Farmers have until the end of January to submit their most prized cattle for scrutiny.

The beef industry in Australia makes up a significant amount of the country's wider farming output. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, over 20 per cent of farmers in Australia are focused solely on the beef industry, with only mixed crop and livestock farmers forming a higher percentage.

Whilst events like the expo next year are a prime opportunity to show off your skills and produce to your peers, ensuring that your herd is safe and protected all year round is key. Elders Insurance offer farm insurance which can be tailored to the specific needs of those in the beef industry. The available farm and property policy will ensure that your - potentially prize-winning - livestock is thoroughly covered in the event of any unfortunate mishaps.
