Increased demand for grains from Asia and Middle East markets

15 April 2014

It's a good time to be a grain grower in Australia. Demand for crops grown in Australia (and in particular in Victoria) are in high demand from Asia and Middle East markets.

To respond to this unprecedented demand the Victorian coalition government and the Australian Export Grains Innovation Centre (AEGIC) are working together to provide the industry with relevant research, information and support.

Speaking on the subject yesterday (November 21), Victoria Minister for Agriculture and Food Security Peter Walsh said supporting grain growers in the state was a priority for the Department of Environment and Primary Industries (DEPI).

By pooling resources with the AEGIC, Mr Walsh believes the Victorian economy and local agricultural industry will be able to maximise benefits from the interest from Asia and the Middle East.

"Under this agreement DEPI and AEGIC will provide the industry with information such as quality requirements of specific markets, crop yield and quality estimates, the emergence of new markets and niche opportunities," Mr Walsh asserted.

"Providing this market intelligence to industry will work in combination with our market development activity and targeted research and development program to increase on-farm productivity and enhance our growers' international competitiveness."

If you are benefitting from increased demand for your grains or crops, you may want to ensure your business is adequately protected. When changes in profit or productivity occur, it's a good idea to check that your business insurance policy is still adequate.

It may also be worth exploring the benefits of crop insurance and business vehicle insurance - every asset you own is worth protecting. By purchasing the right insurance the risk of loss will be mitigated and you will be able to conduct work with peace of mind.
