Australians research financial products online

27 November 2013

A recent survey conducted by TAL reveals that more Australians than ever are taking to Google to research financial products, such as business insurance.

Over 12,000 people took part in the survey, which shows that 56 per cent of Australians (approximately 8 million of us) have used search engines to research at least one financial product in the past year.

Out of those conducting research on new financial products (as opposed to products they already possessed), nearly 50 per cent were doing so to "better educate themselves on the options available".

"The internet has empowered Australians and put them in the driving seat when it comes to their own finances," said Jim Minto, chief executive officer of TAL Group, in a November 11 statement.

Approximately 70 per cent of those who took part in the survey admitted to conducting research on commercial car insurance and / or property insurance over the past year on the internet.

Other financial products they looked at include banking and savings accounts (67 per cent), credit cards (66 per cent), home loans (54 per cent) and superannuation providers (47 per cent).

Interestingly, the survey also demonstrates that men are more likely than women to use the internet to research financial products.

In particular, 76 per cent of men admitted to conducting research on commercial car insurance and / or property insurance, while only 64 per cent of women could say the same.
