Keeping your home insurance up to scratch over Christmas

5 December 2014

The Christmas period is more often than not a time filled with fun, family and much deserved over-indulgence. However, whilst those three things are all well and good, making sure your home insurance policy is up to date over the holidays is crucial if you want to really relax and enjoy the festivities.

Here are some of the things to keep in mind surrounding your policy during the pre-Christmas fervour:

Time can fly

After you've put in the time and effort to find the policy that's right for you, it can be incredibly easy to file away the paperwork and dismiss it. However, one key thing that people tend to forget is that your home and contents cover may need to be amended if you have continually gathered more items of value.

This is never more relevant than at Christmas. Those gifts - the new mountain bike, laptop or games console - may not be covered in the event of accidental damage or worse, theft. Informing your insurer that your circumstances have changed is absolutely key in ensuring that all of those new lovely new gifts get the appropriate coverage they deserve.

Adding more space

If you're hosting the entire family over the Christmas period, chances are that space will be at a premium. If you have recently undertaken any renovations or added an extension to your property, informing your insurer is vital.

There's already a whole host of paperwork and things to worry about if you're embarking on any major home improvement, and the breadth of your insurance coverage may easily be forgotten. However, if you don't make your provider aware of any alterations, they may be well within their rights to not pay out if you do indeed have to make a claim over the holiday period.

Ensuring your home and contents cover is at its most competitive is key at any time, but it's only amplified over Christmas. Elders Insurance can offer both accidental damage and defined events cover which could well be the perfect for those with ever-changing needs.
