In 2011-12, a whopping 65,600 incidents of motor vehicle theft were reported across the country, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) reveals.
This includes privately and company-owned cars, as well as motorcycles, buses, motor homes and trucks.
While a personal insurance policy that contains motor vehicle cover or a business vehicle insurance policy can help you deal with the aftermath of motor vehicle theft, it's important to be proactive and do what you can to avoid such incidents.
So, we compiled a list of five tips to help you keep your motor vehicle safe, both in public and at home.
1) When your car is parked, always roll up the windows completely. Even a tiny crack will make it easier for someone to break in.
2) The WA Police say that, if you have a garage, use it! If you don't, make sure you park your motor vehicle in a space that's well-lit and open, so you or passersby will be able to spot any suspicious activity.
3) Keep your car tidy. A motor vehicle that doesn't contain many belongings is less likely to be a target for car thieves.
4) Never place a spare key anywhere near your motor vehicle. The Allstate Blog claims that many people store a spare key under their cars, just in case they get locked out. A lot of car thieves will be aware of this and know exactly where to look!
5) Consider a car alarm. These are an effective way to attract attention to a motor vehicle that's being tampered with, so it could be worth investing in one.
