Aussie set to become bovine IVF technology world leader

6 May 2013

Inventia Genetic Technologies (IGT) announced on May 3 that their state-of-the-art bovine IVF technology is now available in Australia.

They have just opened a new laboratory in Brisbane, which is all set up and ready to produce embryos using the latest Brazilian cattle reproduction technology on a commercial scale for the domestic and international markets.

Julio Ribeiro, IGT's managing director, believes this is a huge step towards becoming a world leader in this industry for Australia - even though there are other companies that offer bovine IVF treatments, such as Australian Reproductive Technologies.

"IGT is bringing Brazilian techniques, along with highly recognised staff, to Australia to offer local companies the highest possible level of genetic control over their herds," he said.

"The scale and sophistication of the industry in Brazil represents world??€™s best practice and has the potential to transform the domestic cattle industry in Australia.

According to Meat and Livestock Australia, our country is one of the world's most "efficient producers of cattle and the world's largest exporter of beef".

It has been estimated that the gross value of cattle and calf production in Australia is $7.9 billion.

Livestock, then, are clearly a valuable commodity - and this new bovine IVF technology may be the way Australia maintains its world-class production status in future.
