Vintage 2013 - a critical time for grape growers

12 February 2013

With this year's vintage underway, vineyards and winemakers around the country will be hoping that 2013 is one to remember.

Jacob's Creek chief winemaker Bernard Hickin told Adelaide Now recently (January 15) that all signs were pointing to a high quality vintage.

"While it's early days, and the real hard work is still ahead of us, I believe we'll see some great wines from this year across a number of varietals and regions," said Mr Hickin.

Winemakers across the country would have paid extra attention to the summer's high temperatures.

Mr Hickin said that a dry spring and dryer-than-average winter meant that there were some very healthy fruit on the vines, though the recent heatwave had "presented challenges".

"Management of irrigation has been a particularly critical part of this year's pre-vintage preparation and we've been in constant contact with our viticulturists and growers to ensure we're able to harvest as much healthy, high quality fruit as possible."

The Barossa Valley is renowned for its grape growing and wine production, and Elders Insurance agent Paul Bert deals with clients in both industries on a regular basis.

Mr Bert says that now is a critical time for many, as it is their one chance in the year to generate an income.

He helps vineyards and wineries ensure that they have cover for the risks that present themselves during vintage.

Those risks include damage which can be sustained by grapes during transit after picking, or again when being transported after having been crushed.

Machinery can pose a risk too, with the possibility of property damage to vine trellising or to buildings.

By getting to know his clients, the Elders Insurance Barossa agent says that he develops an excellent understanding of their insurance needs.

In an industry which depends on so many different variables coming together, being able to trust in a comprehensive farm and property insurance policy can provide reassurance and peace of mind.
