Mildura rail line back in business after fire damage

14 February 2014

An important rail line in Victoria has reopened ahead of schedule after suffering major damages after a fire last month.

The government announced on Friday (February 7) the Mildura rail line - described as "a vital link between Sunraysia producers and Melbourne ports" - is now back in business. Over 6,000 sleepers were destroyed when the fire, which broke out in the nearby Bronzewing Flora and Fauna Reserve - devoured almost 9 kilometres of track.

Minister for Agriculture and Food Security, Peter Walsh, said the Department of Environment and Primary Industries (DEPI) had "moved quickly to support V/Line with the necessary approvals and access to get repair work underway" in the final week of January.

He added this "swift response" had allowed the Mildura rail line to get up and running more quickly than expected.

"This is a huge relief for the impacted exporters in the Sunraysia region. With peak summer harvest upon us, the Mildura rail line plays a critical role in delivering product to ports," explained Mr Walsh.

When your business is put out-of-action by a damage-causing event, such as a fire, lightning, earthquakes and other types of severe weather, getting "the necessary approvals" and "repair work underway" as soon as possible is important, so you can open your doors and carry on doing what you do best.

A business insurance policy from Elders Insurance can help to make this happen. We can offer you cover for everything from the removal of debris and landscaping costs to re-writing your business records.

In addition to this, we can provide you with business interruption insurance, which will help you stay afloat (by paying outstanding bills and ensuring your workers still receive an income) while you wait for the repair work to be completed.
