Speed Adviser app to help NSW drivers to keep safe

14 February 2014

A new app that will keep children all over New South Wales safe has been launched by Transport for New South Wales.

It's called "Speed Adviser" and designed first and foremost to alert drivers when they are entering school zones, so they can reduce their speed to 40km/h.

Minister for Roads Duncan Gay explained there have been growing concerns about "the visibility of activity school zone speed limit signage" in New South Wales, which could result in many serious accidents.

Speed Adviser boasts many useful features, including up-to-date information about all schools zones across the state. It provides drivers with announcements when they are entering school zones and both spoken and visual warnings if and when they go over the speed limit.

However, Mr Gay explained the app will not only benefit drivers who frequent school zones. It's also equipped with state-of-the-art technology that informs drivers about speed limits in other areas and offers speed camera warnings.

There is also a handy feature for truck and heavy vehicles drivers that announces when they have entered a designated bus or truck zone.

And, best of all, Speed Adviser is absolutely free to download for your smart phone from the App Store!

"Motorists can set it before they leave home or work and it will provide audio alerts," explained Mr Gay in a February 7 statement.

"There is no need to interact with the app at all while driving, in line with laws applying to mobile phones and GPS devices."

He added, however, that Speed Adviser is not meant to replace "good judgement and vigilance" on the road.
