Victoria welcomes 65 brand-new Fire Danger Rating signs

28 November 2013

Victoria will soon be home to 65 brand-new Fire Danger Rating signs, one of which was revealed by the Minister for Police and Emergency Services, Kim Wells, over the weekend.

Mr Wells announced that "Victoria is the first state to develop and roll out automated Fire Danger Ratings signs, so we're leading the country with this technology".

A total of 57 are now operational across the state. The Fire Danger Rating signs are linked to the Country Fire Authority (CFA) website using an RSS feed and state-of-the-art 3G technology.

This means they can be updated at the drop of a hat, displaying the current risk of fire in the areas they're located in.

"The automated signs can also be updated with an alert message sent directly from the State Control Centre, meaning motorists will receive the most up-to-date information on changing conditions," explained Mr Wells.

It's cost the government of Victoria a total of $1.4 million to install these Fire Danger Rating signs. They will supplement the 350 "static" signs that are already set up around the country.

Although the signs will go a long way toward keeping those living and working in Australia aware of the real and present danger fire poses in the state, Mr Wells said everyone should make sure they seek information from a wide range of sources.

"You need to plan your response to these ratings and discuss them ... so you're all clear on what your actions will be in these conditions," he warned.

In addition to this, you may want to investigate your business insurance options.

A comprehensive business property insurance policy with fire cover could save you a whole lot of money if and when your offices are affected by a fire.
