Victorian government makes roads safer

3 January 2014

The government of Victoria has been working hard over the past year to ensure the state's roads are safer and its drivers (and their cars) are able reach their destinations unscathed.

A wide range of strategies have been introduced by the government to decrease the number of road accidents that occur in Victoria each and every year.

For instance, tougher sanctions for people who get behind the wheel drunk or use a mobile phone while they are driving have been implemented.

In addition to this, VicRoads has released a state-of-the-art app, Road Mode, that silences calls and texts when people are driving, preventing them from being distracted by their mobile phones.

The app (which is free to download) sends a message to anyone who tries to contact you, telling them you are driving, and provides you with a summary of the calls and texts you have missed when you have reached your destination.

With the assistance of road safety agencies around the state and Victoria Police, the government has also successfully launched an education program for "reckless drivers" and has set aside a whopping $1 billion to making Victoria's roads a safer place.

All these strategies appear to be working, according to the latest statistics from Premier of Victoria, Denis Napthine.

He revealed in a January 2 media release that Victoria's road toll is currently the lowest it's been in 90 years!

However, Mr Napthine said there's still work to be done, and the government "will not rest until the road toll is zero".

No matter how safe the roads are, however, accidents can and do happen - so it's important to be protected with commercial car insurance.
