Farmers are turning to automated operations

10 November 2015

The agricultural sector is using an increasing number of sophisticated technologies to make operations easier, calling for new and updated skills in the workforce. This is according to the Agri Insights survey from Commonwealth Bank, which shows farmers are keen to move with the times and use technology to make life easier.

However, this hasn't had much of an impact on demand for labour. Of the farmers questioned, 55 per cent said they still need as many employees as they ever did, while 67 per cent revealed their employee needs haven't been affected.

Regardless of what type of farm you're running, it's essential to take out comprehensive farm insurance. We recommend that you carry out a risk management plan, which will help determine what type of protection is most suited to your business.

Geoff Wearne, executive general manager of regional and agribusiness banking at CommBank, explained that the nature of farming is evolving all the time. He also doesn't anticipate that experienced farm workers are likely to be replaced any time soon.

"As farm machinery becomes more sophisticated, there'll be a corresponding need for workers who can operate and maintain complex machines," Mr Wearne noted.

"While there may be less opportunity over time for people to drive machines, there will certainly be a need for people to help farmers optimise their significant capital investments."

Figures from the National Farmers' Federation show the agricultural sector contributes around 3 per cent to the national economy. An estimated 60 per cent of produce is exported, earning the nation $32.5 billion back in 2010-11.

The group revealed there are approximately 134,000 farm businesses in Australia, 99 per cent of which are family owned and operated.

Farmers play an important role in Australia and that's why if you own a farm, protecting your livelihood and assets with the right insurance program is essential.
