Safety highlighted at Farmer of the Year Awards

18 June 2013

Safety is important when it comes to farming, and the fourth annual Australian Farmer of the Year Awards has driven that message home by introducing a new category.

The Australian Farmer of the Year Awards are organised by Kondinin Group and ABC Rural. Awards are presented over a total of 11 categories, including Dairy Farmer of the Year, Livestock Producer of the Year, and Wool Producer of the Year.

One of these winners will also be named overall Farmer of the Year.

Nominations are open for the next six weeks.

This year's event will present a Farm Safety Leader of the Year award to an individual or farming family that has shown admirable commitment to providing a safe working environment for employees.

The award is sponsored by Graincorp, a business which is leading by example. Last year, this company put a three-year plan in place to both raise awareness of safety risks around silos and reduce the number of serious injuries and death related to silos that are taking place at its work sites.

??€œAnything we can do to make our staff not just safer, but proactive in managing safety issues at their sites and in the community, the better it will be for them and for our grower customers,??€ said GrainCorp occupational health and safety general manager Kate Power.

Safe work practices can help to reduce the number of injuries suffered by workers on your farm.

However, it always pays to be prepared should the worst happen.

That's where Elder Insurance comes in. We can provide you a comprehensive farm insurance policy that includes farm liability cover.

This type of cover will make sure that if someone does get injured on your farm, your business will not suffer from severe financial losses.
